I longed for you to leave; it seems perverse
When all my time apart from you is spent
Resenting the commitments that prevent
Our being with each other. I rehearse
The things I want to say and immerse
Myself in fond imaginings; invent
Scenarios of permanent content.
All these my fears of losing you disperse.
And, having lost you only for a while,
Remembering past joy will bring you near.
So when, at last, our duties laid aside
We meet again, to dream still seems worthwhile;
A dream in which you always will be here
To share the past and future at my side.
