Bitter Fruits

(For the ‘friend’ who once let me down)

The sad fact is that friends will let you down.

They only want your company when it suits;

when you need them, they’re nowhere to be found.

You chaperone them when they hit the town

and keep the peace in all of their disputes.

The sad fact is that friends will let you down

unless you’re entertaining, fun, a clown,

content to tag along on their pursuits.

When you need them, they’re nowhere to be found.

Friends are not clones. Your tastes are bound

to differ, though your trust is absolute.

The sad fact is that friends will let you down

if you expect too much. Things run aground

with time and distance, putting down of roots.

When you need them, they’re nowhere to be found.

So let them go, as harsh as it may sound.

Friendship’s a defective institute.

The sad fact is that friends will let you down.

When you need them, they’re nowhere to be found.
