Bedazzled

I wanted to dazzle you

With devilish wit,

To flirt easily

As one accustomed to banter.

I wanted to impress you

With effortless charm,

To hold you in thrall

With tales of achievement,

Boasts of successes

And new conquests in prospect.

I wanted to make you sad

That we had not met before,

That our lives had not touched,

That you felt complete without me.

I wanted to leave you wondering

And wanting more,

Already regretting

That you could not make me stay.

But I was the one who was dazzled,

And all I could say was: “Yes” and: “No”

And, all too soon: “Goodbye”.

I cursed my cheeks for blushing

While I tried to seem aloof,

And my eyes for staring,

And then not staring

In fright and confusion.

For I wanted you to know

How much you mean to me,

But all I could say was: “Yes” and: “No”

And, all too soon: “Goodbye”.
