The Owl and the Pussycat

The owl and the pussycat went to sea

In a miserable leaking coffin

With hundreds as desperate as themselves;

We hear such stories often.

The smugglers took their five pound note

And gave no food or drink

Nor lifejackets, rafts, nor watered wings

Should aye the coffin sink.

The land that once did rule the waves

Said, ‘Let the beggars drown

And that will teach them common sense

And save us many pounds!’

Thus it did founder, pussy floundered,

Owl could not be saved.

O! Would that those who let it be

Now danced upon their grave!
